NTSB turns to microscopes to inspect Dreamliner battery

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The National Transportation Safety Board said on Tuesday it was carrying out a detailed, microscopic investigation of a battery that caught fire on a Boeing Co 787 Dreamliner in Boston this month as the probe dragged into a fourth week.

All 50 Boeing Dreamliners remain grounded around the world, as the U.S., Japanese and French governments continue to investigate that fire and a separate battery-related incident that forced another 787 to make an emergency landing in Japan.

The NTSB said experts at the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center laboratories were looking at a second, undamaged lithium-ion battery pulled from the same Japan Airlines plane that caught fire in Boston for signs of in-service damage and manufacturing defects. Both batteries were built by GS Yuasa , a Japanese company.

At the same time, Boeing was giving investigators relevant fleet information about its 787 airliners, which would help investigators understand the operating history of lithium-ion batteries on those airplanes, the NTSB said.

U.S., Japanese and French safety inspectors - aided by industry officials - have been trying to determine what caused the battery fire on the 787 in Boston and a separate smoke incident that forced the other 787 to make an emergency landing in Japan the following week.

After weeks of investigative work in Japan and various sites in the United States, officials still do not have any answers, raising concerns that Boeing and the airlines that operate the world's newest airliner will face a bigger-than-expected financial hit while it remains grounded.

The NTSB's latest update on the 787 investigation came hours after U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced he planned to resign, marking the latest departure from President Barack Obama's Cabinet.

Boeing's shares closed 0.5 percent lower at $73.65 on the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday. Investors are looking for news about how long the probe will take when Boeing reports its fourth quarter earnings on Wednesday.

A one-month delay in 787 deliveries could cost Boeing $1.2 billion in revenue this year, said Zafar Khan, an analyst at Society Generale. He has a "sell" rating on the stock.

Neither the NTSB, nor the Federal Aviation Administration, which is looking at a broader range of problems with the 787, have set timetables for completing their work.

On Tuesday, the NTSB said its work on the damaged battery from the Boston incident, part of an auxiliary power system, had transitioned from macroscopic to microscopic examinations and also included chemical and elemental analysis of the areas of internal short circuiting and thermal damage.

The undamaged battery being examined by U.S. Navy experts provides backup power for important flight controls on the 787. They are using mechanical and electrical tests to determine the performance of the battery, and to find signs of any degradation in expected performance, the NTSB said.

Other investigators were looking at data from the two digital flight data recorders on the aircraft for any further clues about the performance of the battery and the operation of the charging system, which was built by Securaplane, a unit of Britain's Meggitt Plc .

Investigations are also continuing in Seattle, where Boeing builds the planes, and in Japan.

HTC announces Desire U, 4-inch mid-range device for Taiwan

HTC Desire U

HTC has just quietly rolled out a spec page for a new device, the mid-range Desire U, targeted at the Taiwan market. Falling in line design-wise with the rest of the recent "One" and "Desire" devices, the Desire U has a smooth plastic body and rounded edges with a classy looking circle design that accents the back plate. On the inside, this device is clearly lower end, with a 1GHz processor, 4GB of (expandable) storage, 512MB of RAM and a 480x800 (WVGA) display. The U has a 1650mAh battery, which should give a good bit of life for a device with these specs.

The device is a Taiwanese listing, so the frequencies on this device are set up for that market -- 900 and 2100MHz HSPA along with 900, 1800 and 1900MHz GPRS/EDGE. No one is likely to import this, but with a striking design and acceptable specs, this low-ranger may do well in specific markets. We're finding unlocked pricing of about $275, which is quite competitive.

China's Lenovo sees RIM as M&A option, CFO says

TORONTO (Reuters) - A senior Lenovo executive said on Thursday that the Chinese computer maker may consider Research in Motion as a takeover target, sending the Blackberry maker's shares up 2 percent just a week before it launches a make-or-break line of redesigned smartphones.

But Lenovo, which vaulted into the personal computer market with its 2005 purchase of IBM's PC division, would face formidable hurdles if it tried to buy a company that Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper once described as a national "crown jewel." The Chinese company would also encounter tough regulatory scrutiny in Washington, cybersecurity experts say.

Lenovo, on track to become the world's largest PC maker, has held talks with RIM and its bankers about various combinations or strategic ventures, its chief financial officer, Wong Wai Ming, said on Thursday.

"We are looking at all opportunities - RIM and many others," Wong told Bloomberg in an interview at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. "We'll have no hesitation if the right opportunity comes along."

A spokesman for Lenovo said Wong was asked about RIM by the Bloomberg journalist and that Wong was speaking broadly about Lenovo's M&A strategy.

CRUCIAL JUNCTURE

RIM, once a pioneer in the smartphone industry, has struggled in recent years as its aging line-up of devices have ceded market share to Apple Inc's iPhone and devices based on Google Inc's Android operating system.

RIM hopes its new touch-screen and keyboard devices, powered by its new BlackBerry 10 operating system, will help it claw back some of the lost ground. Optimism surrounding the launch has powered the stock higher in recent weeks.

Last May the Waterloo, Ontario-based company announced a far-reaching strategic review under which it was expected to examine all options, from software licensing deals to an outright sale of the company.

Earlier this week, RIM shares surged to a 13-month high after Chief Executive Thorsten Heins said RIM might consider strategic alliances with other companies after next week's BlackBerry 10 launch.

In an interview with a German newspaper on Monday, Heins said RIM's ongoing strategic review could lead to the sale of its handset business or the licensing of its software to rival smartphone companies.

Even so, analysts expressed skepticism about a Lenovo bid.

"Anybody who's serious about buying a company doesn't go talking it up. ... It sounds to me like a comment made more for publicity's sake than a serious approach for RIM," said Charter Equity analyst Ed Snyder. "It is a very long shot at the best.'

NET BENEFIT TEST

Any bid for RIM would face a rigorous review by the Ottawa to determine whether the deal would bring a "net benefit" to Canada. The Investment Canada Act gives the government the authority to kill deals that could harm Canadian interests or threaten the country's national security.

In response to the comments by Heins, Canada's Industry Minister Christian Paradis told Reuters earlier this week that Canada may even go to the extent of reviewing a sale of RIM's handset business if such a deal was proposed.

"Research in Motion has made an important contribution to information and communications technology in Canada, a sector that is so important to the Canadian economy. We hope they continue to do so well into the future," Paradis said in an emailed response to the Lenovo comments on Thursday.

Cybersecurity experts said Lenovo would likely go up against tough U.S. government scrutiny as well since the Defense Department and other agencies rely on the Blackberry, which is considered more secure than other smartphones.

"A potential acquisition of RIM by Lenovo would raise a number of important security issues," said Michael Wessel, a Commissioner on the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, appointed by Congress.

"Government employees are one of the largest users of RIM's BlackBerry products and the security of their communications has to be of paramount concern," said Wessel, adding that he was speaking on behalf of himself and not the Commission.

After the comments from Lenovo, a RIM spokesman said the company had nothing new to report on its strategic review.

RIM shares closed 2.2 percent higher at $17.74 on Thursday the Nasdaq. The Toronto-listed shares closed 2.9 percent higher at C$17.80. RIM is a volatile stock, and moves of 3 percent and more are not uncommon.

Its shares are down almost 90 percent from an all-time high of over $148 in 2008, but the stock has rallied in the last four months as the launch of the BlackBerry 10 devices nears. The company's shares have nearly tripled in value since dipping as low as $6.22 in late September.

Beyoncé Wasn?t Lip-Syncing

Beyonce performs the National Anthem during the inauguration ceremony on Monday

I'm hoping for a flurry of retractions. A Marine spokesperson said yesterday that she couldn't confirm or deny that Beyonc? wasn't lip-syncing, and pretty much every media outlet assumed that was an admission. On NBC Nightly News, Brian Williams said that Beyonc? wasn?t lip-syncing, but,??in effect, lip-syncing?; Jon Stewart's jokes took it as a given that she faked it; NPR is wringing its hands NPR-ily.

It's bunk. That lady was singing live. She sang to a prerecorded track?a canned band?and perhaps there was a guide vocal in her earpiece, audible only to her, but that was absolutely a genuine performance.

Kelly Clarkson performed to a prerecorded track, too. So did the choir.

I've done a bunch of lip-syncing, in music videos, and it's very easy to spot. Anyone who performs in, shoots, or edits music videos can see the tiny, observable latency endemic to lip-syncing. Beyonc? either sang live, or she's the most gifted?lip-syncer in the history of humanity.

Below is the video for my cover of "Take Me Home, Country Roads." My lips lag pitifully behind the words. It's because?and this is extremely common?the way I sing a song changes very slightly every time, and, six months later, the phrasing can be significantly different. Video directors have asked me to spend three hours listening to my own song, lip-syncing all the while, but I've never done it. The result is an eminently mediocre lip-sync. Ignore the mountaineer in Cazals, and watch my mouth:

Now here's Beyonc? at the inauguration. Again, don't look at anything but her mouth:

For comparison, here's Beyonc?'s video for "Work It Out," in which she's lip-syncing. It's difficult to ignore her thighs, but, please, focus solely on the lips:

If she was indeed lip-syncing at the inauguration, give her the Nobel Prize in mime.

A soldier can differentiate one type of gun from another by the sound of it; a bird-watcher can hear the difference between warblers. If your job is predicated on microphones?as an engineer or a singer?it?s not that hard to tell the difference between a live vocal and a prerecorded one. The easiest way to say it would be that a recorded vocal sounds perfect, in the way that a live vocal can't, and, to those who spend time meticulously mixing imperfect vocals to bring them closer to perfection, it's as plain as day.

In a recording studio, troublesome variables can be smoothed out. The reverb on the vocal can be exactingly calibrated. You can use a much more expensive, sophisticated, delicate microphone; a hand-held, onstage mic needs to be rugged. You can put a "pop screen" in front of the mic?in a live vocal you'll hear Bs and Ps go pmpp!; you'll hear a little more breath; Fs and Ss will make a slight whssh! sound.

The national anthem is a bitch to sing?it?s the K2 of national anthems. The low notes are really low; the high notes are super high. The tune was an 18th-century drinking song, and I'm sure that half the fun of it was that it turned a room of drunks into blissful Biz Markies.

Even Beyonc? seemingly had to decide which notes were worth the risk of flubbing, when choosing a key to sing it in. She chose the lows, at the beginning of the tune. "Oh say can you see" is barely audible; that's probably because if the sound engineer mixed the vocal expressly to make her shakier, lower range louder, the big dramatic notes at the end would shriek. A prerecorded vocal would be mixed such that those low notes would be just as audible as the high notes.

A singer with a big voice learns to pull the mic slightly further from her mouth on big notes, because it gets louder, and she doesn't want to kill people. Rewind that video, and note the words "twilight" and "ramparts." They vary slightly in volume?the low notes are louder than the high notes.

Most dramatically, sound waves actually blow around in the wind. Sometimes, when I do a big outdoor festival, I sound-check in calm weather, but the wind picks up when the actual show begins, taking my voice and throwing it someplace other than where I?m expecting it. It's easy to get confused. A politician might choke, like, "I'm not speaking right! Or the sound's not right! I better be super loud! Or use the mic differently!" That would be a Howard Dean moment. If you're the sound engineer at the inauguration, a big part of your gig is preventing Howard Dean moments.

Beyonc?, being a samurai, clearly came expecting that possibility. So she compensates: She sings the word "bursting" a little too close to the mic, causing a little bit of discernible distortion?it's like a subtler version of when you're talking into the mic on your phone, and you suddenly get loud, or too close, and for a moment the voice gets kind of larger and fuzzier.

When she pulls out her left earpiece?more on that in a moment?she's adjusting how she sounds to herself, and she subsequently pulls the mic further from her face. Notice how the echo suddenly gets more obvious?for a split second, the vocal sounds like it's going through a tin can.

Right after that, you can tell that the sound person is scrambling to adjust the sound, because she's adjusted her mic position. It sounds noticeably different until "Oh say does that star-spangled banner still wave," when the sound is dialed in again.

So: about the in-ear monitors. The sight of her earpiece begat the conspiracy theories, but an earpiece is not, by any means, a sign of lip-syncing. In-ears are worn by almost all singers who can afford them. Everybody who sings in arenas does. It may sound surprising, but, even for fantastic singers, it can be difficult to sing in tune if you're only hearing yourself on an enormous sound system?overhead, flanking you, and facing not you but the audience. Anybody who would sing outdoors, in the wind, in front of hundreds of thousands of people (and millions on TV), without in-ears would be gambling absurdly. The choir was probably too large for everybody to have in-ears, but I bet the soloist did; if Kelly Clarkson didn't use them, I'd be stunned.

Probably she popped it out because the sound was weird?see above. Possibly, she usually performs with just one in, and used both at the inauguration to be extremely cautious?upon beginning to sing, she might've thought, Oh, wait, I don't need this. (When I use in-ears on longer tours, when I can afford to bring along a sound engineer, I always keep one popped out so I don't feel insulated.)

Look, lip-syncing irritates me. It's everywhere. I was stunned that, after the Ashlee Simpson debacle, SNL continued to have musical guests who lip-sync.

And even more grating to me is the use of canned backing tracks when you could just put a real band there. Every single performance at the inauguration was done to prerecorded tracks?as was every performance in 2009, including Yo-Yo Ma?s. (He actually did fake playing his cello, because cold weather makes the wood and the strings of delicate instruments freak out.) I wasn't an enthused viewer of the Bush inaugurations, and I was high during Clinton's, but I'd bet you any sum that performances on those occasions were largely to canned music.

That sucks! America, the richest country in the world, can?t afford to hire an orchestra and put microphones on them? Is it, like, hard, or something? What is this, pregame at the Gator Bowl? But that?s not the scandal?supposed lip-syncing is. It?s weird that nobody in a TV news department, where remote reporters are always wearing an earpiece to hear the anchor back in New York, would explain why singers would use them.

For me, the most compelling evidence that Beyonc? was doing it for real is the HELL YES smile on Joe Biden's face. Now, that is, clearly, a dude standing two feet from an electrifying lady singing like a motherfucker.

U.S. securities fraud class actions tumble

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Fewer investors are taking corporate America to court for fraud.

The number of new federal securities fraud lawsuits seeking class-action status fell to a 7-year low in 2012, according to a study by Stanford Law School and Cornerstone Research released on Wednesday.

Just 152 such lawsuits were filed last year, down 19 percent from 188 in 2011, mainly because of fewer lawsuits challenging mergers.

Last year's total is also 20 percent below the average of 190 for the period from 1997 to 2012.

Only 2005, when 120 lawsuits were filed, was a quieter year for new cases. And in last year's fourth quarter, just 25 new securities fraud lawsuits were filed, the fewest in any quarter since 1997, the first year included in the study.

Big companies also were sued less in 2012 than in prior years. Seventeen companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 index were named as defendants in 2012, versus an average of 31 over the prior decade.

Mark Holland, a securities litigation partner at Goodwin Procter in New York, said the dropoff in new cases may be linked to a recent lack of major market disruptions, such as the 2000 bursting of the technology bubble and the 2008 financial crisis.

Holland also said more lawyers may be turning to state courts to fight mergers.

"State court judges don't have the same tools as federal judges to get rid of cases quickly, so cases can last longer, which can result in more settlements," he said.

According to the study, just 13 merger-related securities fraud lawsuits were filed in federal courts last year, down from 43 in 2011.

The number of lawsuits tied to initial public offerings of Chinese companies, including those with questionable accounting, also dropped, falling to 10 from 31. Last year, moreover, had no new lawsuits tied to the 2008 financial crisis.

Helping to offset these declines was an increase in the number of lawsuits raising more traditional securities fraud claims, such as a failure to disclose market-moving news sooner.

Stanford and Cornerstone said the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's whistleblower program begun after passage of the Dodd Frank financial reforms could spur more lawsuits.

The SEC has said in a report that it received 3,001 tips from October 2011 to September 2012. Nearly half related to corporate disclosures and financials, fraud in securities offerings or manipulation. It gave its first whistleblower award, of nearly $50,000, in August.

Joseph Grundfest, a Stanford law professor and former SEC commissioner, in a telephone interview said a successful SEC whistleblower program could herald more private lawsuits.

"The question is how many cases the SEC brings, how strong those cases are, and how easily will private party plaintiffs be able to 'piggyback' on disclosures from the commission's complaints," he said.

NCAA announces problems with Miami investigation

FILE - In this Jan. 17, 2013, file photo, NCAA President Mark Emmert speaks at the organization's annual convention in Grapevine, Texas. Emmert has ordered an external review of the enforcement program. Miami will not receive its notice of allegations until that review is complete. (AP Photo/LM Otero, File)

(AP) ? The NCAA has found what it calls "a very severe issue of improper conduct" committed by former members of its own enforcement program during the Miami investigation, and will not deliver the long-awaited notice of allegations against the Hurricanes until an external review is completed.

NCAA President Mark Emmert announced the findings Wednesday. The sports governing body said former enforcement staff members worked with the criminal defense attorney for former Miami booster and convicted Ponzi scheme architect Nevin Shapiro "to improperly obtain information ... through a bankruptcy proceeding that did not involve the NCAA."

"I am deeply disappointed and frustrated and even angry about these circumstances," said Emmert, who also described it as "a shocking affair."

The NCAA would not reveal the name of the attorney involved. Shapiro has been represented by Maria Elena Perez, a Miami graduate. Perez did not immediately return a request for comment from The Associated Press on Wednesday. A person in Perez's office told the AP that the attorney was working in New York and would forward a message left at her office.

One key person in the investigation has been former Miami equipment-room staffer Sean Allen, who was deposed by Perez as part of Shapiro's bankruptcy proceedings. If the NCAA found it could not use the information gleaned in that particular deposition, that would be a development figuring to favor the Hurricanes

Miami President Donna Shalala in a statement released through the university that she is "frustrated, disappointed and concerned" that the NCAA may have compromised the investigation.

"As we have done since the beginning, we will continue to work with the NCAA and now with their outside investigator hoping for a swift resolution of the investigation and our case," Shalala said.

Shalala's statement also said Miami first informed the NCAA of possible violations more than two years ago.

"I have been vocal in the past regarding the need for integrity by NCAA member schools, athletics administrators, coaches, and student-athletes," Emmert said. "That same commitment to integrity applies to all of us in the NCAA national office."

Emmert said the NCAA learned of the alleged misconduct, in part, through legal bills presented by Shapiro's attorney for work that was not properly approved by the organization's general counsel's office.

"One of the questions that has to be answered, unequivocally, is what was the nature of that contractual arrangement and what was all the activity that that individual was involved with," Emmert said. "There is some uncertainty about all of that and it's one of the first orders of business for the firm that we've hired to investigate."

Emmert spoke angrily at times during a half-hour conference call to discuss the findings, in which he revealed that he briefed the NCAA's executive committee and the Division I board presidents with some information about the Miami matter. He said he developed a better understanding of what went on in the days that followed, which led to the hiring of Kenneth L. Wainstein of the firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP to conduct the external review of what happened.

Emmert said he hopes that process could be completed within two weeks, and that the investigation would continue with "appropriately acquired evidence."

The NCAA utilized information from two depositions conducted as part of the bankruptcy case, and Emmert said one of the questions he wants Wainstein's query to answer will be, "How in the world can you get this far without it being recognized that this was an inappropriate way to proceed?

"We cannot have the NCAA bringing forward an allegation that's predicted on information that was collected by processes none of us could stand for," Emmert said. "We're going to move it as fast as possible, but we have to get this right."

The Hurricanes' athletic compliance practices have been probed by the NCAA for nearly two years. Allegations of wrongdoing involving Miami's football and men's basketball programs became widely known in August 2011 when Yahoo Sports published accusations brought by Shapiro, who is serving a 20-year term in federal prison for masterminding a $930 million Ponzi scheme.

Miami has self-imposed two postseason bans in response to the investigation. The Hurricanes also would have played in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game this past season, meaning they could have qualified for the Orange Bowl.

"Although we are deeply disappointed in this turn of events, we strongly support the actions President Emmert is taking to address the problem," said Lou Anna K. Simon, the NCAA's executive committee chair and Michigan State's president.

This would figure to be another significant issue for the NCAA and its enforcement department. Among the others pending:

? A California case filed by former Southern Cal assistant football coach Todd McNair, who said the NCAA was "malicious" in its investigation into his role in the benefits scandal surrounding Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Frederick Shaller said he was convinced the actions of NCAA investigators were "over the top."

? Earlier this month, the NCAA was sued by Pennsylvania Gov. Thomas W. Corbett, who claimed the sports governing body overstepped its authority and "piled on" when it penalized Penn State for the Jerry Sandusky scandal last summer. The governor asked a federal judge to throw out the sanctions, arguing that the measures ? which include a four-year bowl ban and $60 million fine ? have harmed students, business owners and others who had nothing to do with Sandusky's crimes.

And now comes Miami, an investigation that was believed to be nearing an end.

Many people who expected to be named in the notice of allegations had been briefed in recent days about what charges they may face, and the NCAA and Miami had reviewed some draft, or preliminary, findings.

Now the drawn-out inquiry has taken its most bizarre turn.

"In my two-and-a-half years I've certainly never seen anything like this, and don't want to see it again," Emmert said.

Free skin cancer screening scheduled for January 26 | The Salina Post

SRHCVerticalLogo_colorJust because it?s cold outside doesn?t mean you?re not at risk from sun?s damaging ultraviolet rays. Snow on the ground can actually increase your exposure. In light of this the Tammy Walker Cancer Center at Salina Regional Health Center is hosting a free skin cancer screening clinic Saturday, January 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Fortunately, most skin cancers, including melanoma, are curable if detected early. About 1 million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States, making it the most common type of cancer found.

Each person should look over his or her entire body ? including back, scalp, soles of feet, between toes and even palms of hands ? for changes in shape, size, color or texture of moles and other unusual skin changes. Liberal use of sunscreen and limiting exposure to sun are the best defenses against skin cancer.

Appointments for the clinic are required by calling?(785) 452-4848?and space is limited. Just come to the Cancer Center, 511 S. Santa Fe, during your allotted time. Doctors from the Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency Program and the Heartland Dermatology will evaluate patients.

White veins of Mars: Curiosity hits 'a jackpot' in quest for wetter past

Curiosity rover has found mineral-filled fissures in the rocks of Gale Crater on Mars. Together with other evidence, the minerals suggest that the rocks were once 'saturated with water.'

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / January 15, 2013

White veins of minerals coursing through rocks on the floor of Mars's Gale Crater are providing some of the strongest evidence yet that the rover Curiosity's landing site once was a wetter, warmer place.

The details are still fuzzy. But the composition of the minerals indicate that they precipitated out of water flowing through fissures in the rock, while large grains within the rocks themselves are rounded, suggesting that water might have dulled their sharp edges.

Yellowknife Bay, the rocky expanse Curiosity currently inhabits, "is literally shot through with these fractures," says John Grotzinger, a geologist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena., Calif., and the mission's chief scientist.

It also features abundant, berry-shaped spherules that scientists say are sedimentary concretions formed in and worked over by water.?

All together, "basically these rocks were saturated with water," Dr. Grotzinger explained during a briefing Tuesday outlining the rover's latest exploits.

Yellowknife Bay represents "a jackpot unit," he added. Initially, researchers thought they might have to drive Curiosity up on the shoulders of Mt. Sharp, a towering summit in the middle of the crater, to find such a trove.

If Curiosity made these finds on Mt. Sharp, "we would have been absolutely thrilled," Grotzinger says.

Curiosity, a one-ton geochemistry lab on wheels, landed on Mars in August. Its goal is to see if the crater at one time could have been hospitable for simple forms of organic life. Curiosity has spent the last six months exercising its suite of 10 instruments and its seven-foot robotic arm in a series of tests aimed at ensuring all the hardware is working well before the rover heads for Mt. Sharp, its ultimate destination.

The rover probably won't begin to explore Mt. Sharp for another year.

Curiosity has traveled slightly more than a quarter of a mile, as the crow flies, since landing. Along the way, however, scientists have chosen targets for instrument tests that have already provided insights into the crater's geologic past ? including evidence for an ancient stream bed.

Write, write, write: Script guru Michael Hauge on the hero's journey

After about a decade spent in the marvelously mad world of screenwriting, you'll know all the terms, you'll know about structure, you'll know what they want to hear in meetings and you'll know how to get it across.? After the second decade (as is the case with me), all of the above is pretty much internalized - you don't think about it anymore, it's become part of who you are. You're also in a place where you'll want to go your own creative ways, challenge yourself, break a few rules - and you can do all of that because you know the essentials inside out.

But as a beginner all that stuff, the books, the seminars, the workshops, the dos and don'ts - it can seriously wear you down and/or scare you off. Here's a few thoughts that'll hopefully encourage you to NOT quit (at least not before you've given it a decade or so).

And below's a series of roughly 4min clips by script guru Michael Hauge. I have to admit he pisses me off right off the bat - his first words are "The first 10% ..." - and you'll see he structures it all very ?concretely. I can't stand numbers and I most certainly don't think of scripts in percentages ... but you need to realize that the man's got a point - it's a business and if producers think in percentages, it is essential that you understand and speak their language, too.

So view the clips, they're sound - and what I particularly like - they lead you through the theory of the hero's journey with the concrete example of "The Firm". So watch, take from it what you can and then get back to writing!

What happens when you hit your thirties?

goo Ranking took a look at what experiences on reaching one?s thirties people can identify with, for both women and men.

Demographics

Between the 5th and 7th of November 2012 1,049 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 58.8% of the sample were female, 10.2% in their teens, 14.6% in their twenties, 27.5% in their thirties, 25.1% in their forties, 11.0% in their fifties, and 11.7% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample. Perhaps only those over thirty answered this question.

There?s a suspicious 5% gap between each answer for the women, so that would mean the top answer only got 20 votes, which does seem very low, especially since for the men there seems to be around 100 votes for their top answer.

I don?t think I really felt anything particular in my thirties, although I can identify with many of the answers with regards to hitting my forties!

China figures shore up markets

LONDON (AP) ? Mounting hopes over China's economy combined with signs that the U.S. recovery is gaining traction to shore up markets, particularly in Asia, Friday.

Following a lackluster start to the week, investors have since been cheered by the signals showing the two world's largest economies have started 2013 in relatively rude health. Many stock indexes around the world, including the Dow, are trading are multiyear highs amid optimism over the world economy and hopes that Europe's debt crisis is slowly coming under control.

On Thursday, figures showing weekly U.S. jobless claims down at a five-year low and a strong rebound in housing starts turned the mood around. That buoyant backdrop carried through into the Asian session on Friday and that was accentuated by figures showing China's economy, the world's number 2, grew 7.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012, up from the previous quarter's 7.4 percent and just ahead of predictions for a 7.8 percent rise. Industrial production and retail sales figures also came in better than expected.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.3 percent at 6,147 while the CAC-40 in France rose 0.1 percent to 3,747. Germany's DAX was 0.2 percent lower at 7,721.

"The new year rally continues unabated," said Rebecca O'Keeffe, head of investment at Interactive Investor. "Today it is being sustained by positive news from China."

Wall Street was poised for a flat opening, with both Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 index unchanged. Both indexes closed Thursday at their highest levels in five years.

Later, the focus will return to the latest batch of U.S. corporate earnings, including figures from Morgan Stanley. So far, bank earnings have been mixed.

"After slightly disappointing results from both Citi and Bank of America, it is Morgan Stanley's moment in the spotlight today," said Gary Jenkins, managing director of Swordfish Research.

The monthly consumer sentiment survey from the University of Michigan is also released shortly after U.S. markets open and that has the potential to swing the mood one way or the other.

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 soared 2.9 percent to close at 10.913.30, the highest finish in nearly three years, as the yen slipped against the dollar.

For a while, the dollar was trading above the 90-yen line for the first time since June 2010 as expectations intensified that the Bank of Japan will take steps to ease credit next week. A weaker yen is a significant boost for Japan's powerhouse exporters. By midmorning London time, the dollar sup up 0.1 percent at 89.90 yen.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1.1 percent to 23,601.78 and South Korea's Kospi added 0.7 percent to 1,987.85. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.3 percent to 4,771.20.

In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite Index rose 1.4 percent to 2,317.07 while the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index gained 1.5 percent to 935.7

Oil prices were fairly subdued following recent strong gains, with the benchmark New York rate down 20 cents at $95.29 a barrel. On Thursday, the contract gained $1.25 to finish at $95.49 a barrel, its highest close since last September.

Elsewhere, the euro, which has had a strong start to the year amid hopes over Europe's debt crisis, was down 0.1 percent on the day at $1.3353.

DaPonte: RI progressives are wrong about income tax changes ...

January 18th, 2013 at 5:00 am by Ted Nesi under Nesi's Notes, On the Main Site

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Dan DaPonte has had it with liberal critics of the income tax law he helped shepherd through the General Assembly in 2010.

DaPonte, D-East Providence, and his colleagues are under renewed pressure this legislative session from Rhode Islanders for Tax Equity, a coalition of?progressive activists and unions leaders who want taxes hiked on upper-income residents. This year?s top rate is 5.99% on income above $133,250.

DaPonte, the Senate?s top budget-writer and a key lieutenant to Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed, told me on Wednesday he doesn?t want to revisit the issue:

I think the 2010 changes that are in place are appropriate. I think when you look at the increased revenues that we?ve gotten ? I?m anxiously awaiting the revenue report that?s published in March, to show which income brackets paid what taxes.

I?m still quite honestly confused at the liberal opinion that the 2010 personal income tax reform was a big giveaway to high-income earners. From everyone that I?ve heard from, particularly tax professionals who do this stuff for a living ? they have a completely opposing opinion, that that is not, in fact, what we did do.

That was testified to during the process. There are going to be winners and losers, but we needed a simpler, fairer tax formula, and that?s what we have now.

How To Increase Your Lead Generation | MTD Sales Training Blog

There isn?t much in sales that?s more important than your pipeline generation. Without leads, you?re dead in the water, and in order to take control of the quality of leads coming through, and manage them effectively, you need a quality system that will back you up and keep those leads coming to you.

Here are some tips on how to generate and increase your lead generation:

Quality Referral Systems. These must be robust and offer both you and the customer opportunities for more business

Guaranteeing Orders Through Risk-Reversal. This means there is no-risk on behalf of the client actually agreeing to your proposal. You should offer a money-back promise if the product or service doesn?t do what you say it will. You should be baring the risks, so the customer feels they can trust you and not worry about consequences if there are discrepancies in performance

Long-Term Relationship Benefits. There should be a system in place that recognises when a client gives repeat and long-term orders. The longer they sign up to you, the better the results for them and the easier it is for you to manage.

Proper Use Of Directed Direct Mail. This means your list has to be well-defined and that you have a really good chance of hitting the prospects who are in the market for your products. A one in a thousand response rate is a waste of your and their time

Effective Telemarketing. Your marketing approach should offer real, tangible benefits to the companies you are approaching, rather than just being a cold-call approach that undermines the morale of those making the approaches

Hold Special Events Or Information Sessions. These free-of-charge events should add extra value to all prospects. It allows them to see what you can offer and makes it a no-brainer to deal with you. It also gives you a great list of prospects that you can nurture

Develop A Unique Selling Proposition. You have to differentiate yourself in ways that will be beneficial to your prospects. These do not include quality, warranties, speed of delivery and such-like. All your competitors will offer the same. No, these are tangible benefits that the client will get from you that they can?t get from anyone else

Increase The Perceived Value Of What You Offer. You do this by showing the results you will bring to the client. The more they see how their business will thrive and grow by using you, the better your chances of doing business. Perceived value is what they get as a result over the long-term, not the cheapness of your product up-front

Better Client Education. Here, you become the partner to your client by showing your knowledge of their market and guiding them on how to exploit opportunities that you, with your wider experience and research, have found lurking in the undergrowth. They may be too close to the ground to see the opportunities that you can see from your higher position

Increase Your Sales Skills. You do this by researching the new ideas of what works and what doesn?t in today?s market-place. If you?re still selling in the same way as you did five years ago, you are being left behind by those sales professionals who have adapted to the new markets and what is now required to drive businesses forward

Qualify Leads Up-Front. Not every lead will be worth the time and effort to pursue.? Be aware of which clients will benefit most from spending time working on, and utilise that time efficiently

Deliver More Than You Promise. Your clients will expect the level of service that?s in your SLA. It?s only by going beyond that level that you will create excellent ?moments of truth?, situations that will ?wow? them and make them delighted they chose you as a partner

Nurture The Relationships Through Quality Communications. This means sending them articles you find that will benefit them, referring them to customers you find on your travels, expanding the contacts within your company and theirs, and making them aware of new opportunities in new markets. This will prove that you?re not contacting them simply to sell more of your stuff?you genuinely are interested in their business success and want them to make more profits

?????????????

All of these will help you build the business with current clients and attract new prospects to visit you, because you offer something that others don?t?.reasons to be loyal and benefit from the long-term relationships that you can nurture.

Happy Selling!

Quinton ?Rampage? Jackson is so over the UFC

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson will fight Glover Teixiera at UFC on Fox 6. If Jackson stays true to his word, it will be his last fight in the UFC. He has complained about being a part of the UFC time and time again. He reiterated on a pre-fight press call that he is done, done, done with the UFC. This is the last fight of his contract, and he has no plans to renegotiate with them.

"I think the UFC don't know how to treat the athletes, in my opinion," he said. "I feel like the fighters do a lot for the sport and I feel like we're not taken care of well enough. I feel like they're getting rich off all of us."

His cries are starting to sound like the lyrics to a Taylor Swift song. Jackson and the UFC are never ever ever getting back together. But if he doesn't fight for the UFC, his options for high-level MMA are limited. He said he could try other combat sports like kickboxing or boxing. Bellator could be an option, but one of Jackson's beefs with the UFC has been their matchmaking. The tournament set-up could be tough for him to deal with.

Either way, enjoy Jackson in the UFC while you can, because it's over for real this time.

Denver Mayor Hancock injured warming up to pay off Broncos bet with Ray Lewis dance

FILE -- Denver Mayor, and Broncos fan, Michael Hancock (Manuel Martinez, Viva Colorado)

While hearts are still broken all over the state following the Denver Broncos loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock is hurting for a different reason.

When the Broncos lost Sunday in double-overtime, Hancock also lost a bet with the Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and was going to have to preform linebacker Ray Lewis' famous pre-game dance.

Well, it ain't happening. Not because Hancock is welching on the bet, but because he hurt himself Monday evening.

The mayor's spokeswoman Amber Miller says he was hurt "during pre-game warm-ups."

Hancock is "expected to be on the field in the second half, ready to carry out the game plan and fulfill his end of the wager," she said.

Had the Broncos prevailed, Rawlings-Blake said the Washington Monument would be lit in blue and orange Broncos colors.

Food was also on the line. Hancock agreed to send a box of dry aged "cowboy cut" rib-eye steaks from Lombardi Brothers Meats.

Rawlings-Blake would have had to send a platter of broiled crab cakes from J. W. Faidley Seafood in Baltimore's historic Lexington Market.

Clerics demand military protection after terror attacks

Shi?ite clerics have urged their followers to join peaceful protests in the wake of the killing of more than a hundred people in coordinated suicide bombings on Thursday.

?Come out of your houses against this massacre. The freezing cold has shaken the whole world except our rulers. This is a test of our patience,? said Allama Raja Nasir Abbas Jaffari, head of the Shia Majlis Wahdat e Muslimeen (MWM).

He made the appeal last night to families of the bombing victims who have occupied Alamdar Road in Quetta, where one suicide bomber targeted a pool hall in the majority Shia neighborhood, and another targeted first responders and journalists.

?I urge the president to disqualify our cowardly chief minister who is presently abroad. He is also our murderer,? Jaffari said.?

Since the bomb attack, mourning Shi?ite Muslims have demanded army intervention in Balochistan province by blocking Alamdar with the shrouded coffins of the dead.

The bodies have since been relocated to an imambargah, or Shi?ite religious hall.?

?We shall not bury our dead until our province is handed over to the army. There is no other option?, said Bostan Ali Khushtnand, one of the mourners who braved seven degree Celsius temperatures to join the protest.

Khushtnand spent the night sitting beside the coffins of three young relatives, during which he says he read the Qu?ran.

?Temperatures dropped further during the night when it started raining but we did not move and kept our heads down. None of us looked for shelter. We are prepared for bullets and bombings.?

According to a recent report by the MWM, nearly 800 Shia Muslims have been killed since the ruling Pakistan People?s Party gained power in 2008.

The group claims that Balochistan province ranks first in numbers of dead with 156 killed in targeted attacks, including two religious scholars who were beheaded.

?We are witnessing the dawn of a new holocaust. None of the government officials have contacted us so far. Our provincial members are intoxicated with power and corruption?, said Abdul Khaliq Hazara of the Hazara Democratic Party.

Party leaders have started a sit-in and hunger strike to demand protection for the province?s Shia communities.

?The hunger strike is scheduled for 72 hours and we await federal notice to start an army operation against the terrorists, most of whom are supported by provincial ministers?, Hazara said.
