Structure of carbon's 'Hoyle state' revealed

Dec. 10, 2012 ? A North Carolina State University researcher has taken a "snapshot" of the way particles combine to form carbon-12, the element that makes all life on Earth possible. And the picture looks like a bent arm.

Carbon-12 can only exist when three alpha particles, or helium-4 nuclei, combine in a very specific way. This combination is known as the Hoyle state. NC State physicist Dean Lee and German colleagues Evgeny Epelbaum, Hermann Krebs and Ulf-G. Meissner had previously confirmed the existence of the Hoyle state using a numerical lattice that allowed the researchers to simulate how the protons and neutrons interact. When the researchers ran their simulations on the lattice, the Hoyle state appeared together with other observed states of carbon-12, proving the theory correct from first principles.

But they also wanted to find out how the nucleons (the protons and neutrons inside the nucleus of an atom) were arranged inside the nucleus of carbon-12. This would enable them to "see" the structure of the Hoyle state. Using the same lattice, the researchers, along with collaborator Timo Laehde, found that carbon-12's six protons and six neutrons formed three "alpha clusters" of four nucleons each. At low energy, the alpha clusters tended to clump together in a compact triangular formation. But for the Hoyle state, which is an excited energy state, the three alpha clusters combined in a "bent arm" formation.

The researchers' findings will appear this month in Physical Review Letters.

"It's interesting that a straight chain seems not to be the preferred configuration for the Hoyle state," Lee says. "A bend in the chain seems necessary. This work leads us to the question of what other nuclei have such alpha cluster shapes. These would be rather exotic structures in nuclear physics and open some really interesting questions regarding shape and stability. For example, can we have longer chains of alpha clusters? We are investigating these possibilities."

Hawking, CERN scientists win huge physics prize

GENEVA (AP) ? A Russian billionaire's foundation is awarding two special prizes of $3 million each to British cosmologist Stephen Hawking for his work on black holes and to seven scientists at the world's biggest atom-smasher for their roles in the discovery of a new subatomic particle believed to be the long-sought Higgs boson.

Yuri Milner's Fundamental Physics Prize Foundation announced the awards in a statement Tuesday.

Hawking is honored for his discovery of Hawking radiation from black holes "and his deep contributions to quantum gravity and quantum aspects of the early universe."

The prize money for the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, is being split among a scientist who oversaw the building of the $10 billion atom smasher and six physicists who oversaw two teams of 3,000 scientists each.

6 dead as heavy snow hits Balkans

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) ? Freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall have killed at least six people and caused travel chaos across the Balkans, with rescue teams struggling to reach passengers stranded in buses and cars in Serbia on Sunday.

Officials said four people have died in Croatia and two in Serbia as a result of blizzards in the region of southwestern Europe over the weekend, closing airports and roads and blocking public transportation in big cities.

People traveling in vehicles waited for hours on several roads in Serbia's northern province of Vojvodina, including the main highway leading from Belgrade to the Hungarian border, before rescue teams could free them from 50 centimeters (20 inches) of snow that had fallen in just a few hours.

A woman gave birth to a healthy baby in a stranded truck on her way to a hospital, and named her Snezana, or "Snow White" in Serbian, state TV reported.

By late afternoon, 660 people, including 30 children, were evacuated from stranded vehicles, Serbia's emergency authorities said, adding that army tanks were used to remove heavy trucks that skidded and blocked highways.

Ivica Dacic, who serves as Serbia's prime minister and interior minister, ordered all available police personnel to take part in the rescue operations.

The airport in Zagreb, Croatia, was closed for several hours Saturday, and some roads were closed because of high winds and heavy snow. The situation improved in Croatia on Sunday, but a warning against driving remained in place because of icy roads.

Croatian authorities said it was the heaviest snowfall in Zagreb in 57 years.

Authorities in Serbia and Croatia warned people to stay indoors.

Blizzards also hit Slovenia and Bosnia.

As the storms headed east across the Balkans on Sunday, Romania's army was trying to clear snowbound roads as the country voted in a parliamentary election.

The Self-Esteem and Beanie Baby 'Bubbles' | Psychology Today

As the parent of a Millennial and someone who writes about them, I think about the two ?bubbles??one lasting longer than the other with more profound consequences?that animated the lives of parents and children in the 1990s and beyond:? Self-esteem and Beanie Babies. Let me explain the connection. ??

During my daughter?s early years of education, self-esteem and its possible loss were omnipresent.? The ambergris of the time, self-esteem was both prized and fragile, the magic elixir that would keep your child safe from drug use and other dangers, make him or her perform better in school, enjoy enhanced popularity and friendship, and be genuinely happy for life.

Guarding self-esteem motivated heated discussions and as well as many misguided efforts: team sports in which every player got a trophy; teachers writing comments on schoolwork in pencil because ink seemed too ?permanent? and, in some places, banning red pens as being too hurtful and harsh; and ladling out praise for everything and nothing.

Criticism, even the constructive kind, was thought to be too damaging. As Dr. Arthur Levine, who has studied the Millennials and written a book about them, noted in an interview: ?This is a generation that was not allowed to skin their knees. They got awards and applause for everything they did, even if it was being the most improved, or the best trombone player born on April 5.??

Another parent of a Millennial recalls that ?the whole ?I?m special? movement was very influential in my child?s preschool. They all had a chance, for instance, to be ?person of the day.?? Traditional science and history fairs?that is, competitions?were under attack by parents who felt that ?not winning? (a softer way of describing losing which fit right into the zeitgeist) might damage their kids? self-esteem. In one town, a compromise was reached to deal with the fragility of kindergarteners? self-esteem:? a first and a second prize were awarded, with the rest of the grade ?tied? for third place. Put on paper, it all seems pretty preposterous, but that?s how it played out.

Parents didn?t invent the self-esteem construct, of course; it trickled down out of psychological studies and, as it did, it grew into a virtual flood of articles, news reports, and books (including one I wrote). Parents bought into it because it was the prevailing wisdom of the time and who knew what would happen to your hapless kid if you weren?t ever watchful?

If Millennials today suffer from FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), their parents certainly worried about FAILURE?their kids? and their own?in big caps, all of it tied to loss of self-esteem. I remember one mother who dyed her seven-year-old?s hair ?to help her self-esteem? and the eight-year-old who came to school fully made up so ?she?d feel better about herself and more confident.? There were the parents who sent their nine-year-old son to a life coach to help build up his apparently fragile sense of self.

Enter the Beanie Baby onto the self-esteem scene. If you were a little girl, the Beanie Baby quickly became your heart?s desire, although many Millennial boys collected them too. For those of you who somehow missed the craze, Beanies were (and still are) soft and cuddly $5 plush animals which came with a tag that stated their names and ?story,? like Freckles the Leopard and Allie the Alligator.? More important ?even though many, many millions were manufactured? they were only sold through specialty gift and toy stores which only received a limited number so they were hard to come by.? And they were ?retired? from manufacturing so an enormous secondary and collector?s market sprung up, along with magazines and books devoted to them. Gobs of money were made (and spent). Beanie Baby hunting?finding the elusive new one and being the first to have it?became an activity. (Admission: I was one of those parents. I was on waitlists at stores in Manhattan and New Jersey and, no, I don?t wish to calculate the exact amount I spent on them.)??

The stage was thus set for Beanie Babies to be conflated with self-esteem?a perfect Millennial storm. I remember one mother, an executive in Manhattan who worked full time and had a nanny, paid $250 for the purple ?Princess? bear. She was a commemorative for the late Princess Diana and impossible to come by, and, yes, her kid was the first in the school to have it. A big self-esteem score there and a competitive sport that the Baby Boomers and their Millennial offspring could get into. (Admission: I acquired two Princess bears at $5 each some time later; my daughter sold one for something like $100 and was able to acquire the Garcia tie-dye bear she desperately wanted at a Beanie Baby convention. I?m not qualified to speculate on how that affected her self-esteem.)

And, then, it was over. The Beanie Baby bubble burst along with the dot.coms, production ceased in 1999, and that was that, and I, along with millions of other Americans, had too many of these things hanging around, collecting dust. As it happens, the self-esteem bubble was about to be pricked too, but it took a bit longer and, somehow, the message didn?t trickle down to masses?that is, parents and teachers? for longer than that. A 2003 report by Roy F. Baumeister, Jennifer D. Campbell, Joachim I. Krueger, and Kathleen D. Vohs titled ?Does High-Esteem Cause Better Performance, Interpersonal Success, Happiness, or Healthier Lifestyles?? made it clear that the ?you?re so special? approach was, to be blunt, not a very good one. For efficiency, I?ll quote from the summary offered by the authors:

  • The modest correlations between self-esteem and school performance do not indicate that high self-esteem leads to good performance.? Instead, high self-esteem is partly the result of good school performance.
  • Self-esteem has not been shown to predict the quality or duration of relationships.
  • High self-esteem makes people more willing to speak up in groups and to?criticize the group?s approach?. Relative to those with low self-esteem, those with high self-esteem show greater in-group favoritism, which may increase prejudice and discrimination.
  • High self-esteem does not prevent children from smoking, drinking, taking drugs?or engaging in early sex.
  • Overall, the benefits of self-esteem fall into two categories: enhanced initiative?and pleasant feeling.

And then there is the ?ouch? statement: ?In view of the heterogeneity of high self-esteem, indiscriminate praise might just as easily promote narcissism, with its undesirable consequences.?

Gee, you think? So while high self-esteem does make you feel happier, it also may give you an inflated sense of your own abilities and self-importance. As it happens, Millennials didn?t need that boost since what?s called the ?above average effect??the bias in thinking that causes people to overestimate their strengths and underestimate their weaknesses?was already alive and well, thank you very much.?

So, other than inflicting them with FOMO, how the did the self-esteem tsunami affect the Millennials? Well, I?m not inclined to believe that the need for ego boosts is addicting as?Brad J. Bushman, Scott J, Moeller, and Jennifer Crocker suggest in their study titled ?Sweets, Sex or Self-Esteem,? nonetheless the finding that college kids prefer boosts to their esteem to sex, food, and even booze is pretty amazing, on the one hand, and not surprising on the other.

So please pause before you praise your child just for being. Have it connected to something he or she has done. As for the Millennials, I suspect that life experience will, inevitably, introduce them to some criticism, perhaps even written in red ink, which may help temper that ?I?m so special? view of themselves their parents foisted on them. Life, alas, isn?t conducted on a pass/fail basis.

Inside the Future: How PopMech Predicted the Next 110 Years

Almost every day somebody posts the following on Twitter or Facebook: "In 1949, forecasting the relentless march of science, Popular Mechanics said, 'Computers in the future may weigh no more than 1.5 tons.'"

It is one of those quotations?often plucked from online lists of similar nuggets?that people like to circulate as a pleasant reminder of how much smarter they are than those who lived before them.

The actual quotation, from the March 1949 issue of Popular Mechanics, goes like this: "Where a calculator like ENIAC today is equipped with 18,000 vacuum tubes and weighs 30 tons, computers in the future may have only 1000 vacuum tubes and perhaps weigh only 1? tons."

It reads a bit differently in context, no? Written at the time when computers were still huge mechanical/electrical contraptions, the article provided a pretty solid overview of the infant technology. Of course, what the article did not anticipate were two of the most pivotal inventions in human history: the transistor, which came into widespread use in the mid-1950s, and the integrated circuit, or microchip, which intensified the march toward miniaturization a decade later. The first fully transistorized computer, the IBM 608, hit the market in late 1957.

It weighed 1.2 tons.

And therein lies the dilemma for anyone who dares speculate about the future. Even if you're accurate in the near term?and PM's 1949 story was a respectable piece of prognostication?a prediction can begin to look naive or ridiculous when viewed a generation or two later. But we don't let that stop us. As a magazine about science and engineering, it's our job to explain how technologies just now coming into view might shape the future.

In preparing this 110th anniversary issue of Popular Mechanics, I've spent a lot of time leafing through our archives. It's pretty inspiring to see how well the magazine anticipated crucial turning points in technology?the impact of the automobile, the rise of mass aviation, the space program. In a 1932 article, Winston Churchill predicted a combination of telephone and television that sounds a lot like today's Internet. And when the Internet era finally did dawn, PM devoted a 1994 cover story to this new "Information Superhighway," calling it "the greatest social revolution since the automobile." Yep, that sounds about right.

One of my favorite articles was written by science writer Waldemar Kaempffert and published in 1950. Entitled "Miracles You'll See in the Next Fifty Years," the piece showed remarkable prescience, predicting the interstate highway system, automated factories, weather-forecasting supercomputers, and medical imaging devices similar to modern CAT scans. But Kaempffert's misses were as interesting as his hits. He envisioned a future in which "rich people in a hurry" would fly in 1000-mile-per-hour rocket planes, while ordinary folks would commute in the "family helicopter."

Sorry to disappoint you, dear readers, but we're still waiting on those. Here's the problem: Just because something is possible does not mean it is inevitable. Building a supersonic passenger jet (though not a rocket) became feasible in the late 20th century?and the Concorde really did cruise at Mach 2, or more than 1300 mph. But the high-speed fuel guzzler never made money, and it was finally pulled from service in 2003. Similarly, those personal helicopters (the subject of much hopeful conjecture in PM over the years) would be simple enough to build. But there is no simple way to fit millions of new aircraft into our urban skies?and the very idea injects new terror into the phrase "learner's permit."

One of the most fascinating things in the Kaempffert article is his depiction of domestic life circa 2000: Homes are built of metal and plastic; dishes, sheets, and clothing are all disposable; and, to clean up, the homemaker "simply turns the hose on everything." Even food would be synthesized from sawdust and wood chips and delivered to the home in frozen blocks.

It was a logical expectation. Midcentury America quickly embraced novelties such as polyester clothing, frozen TV dinners, and labor-saving dishwashers. Why wouldn't such trends continue indefinitely? Well, it turns out that while we all appreciate convenience, we also like a good home-cooked meal once in a while. Most Americans still walk on wood floors, wear cotton and wool clothing, and cook food that their great-grandparents would find quite familiar. One of the biggest challenges in forecasting the future isn't understanding technology, it's understanding people?and people don't have an unlimited appetite for change.

Perhaps the trickiest part of making predictions is getting the timing right. Some advances are slowed by social inertia or economic impracticality. Others suddenly leap ahead as a result of a technological breakthrough such as the microchip.

In making the 110 predictions in this special issue, we tried to balance our deep-rooted techno-optimism with some hardheaded skepticism. We turned to scores of experts?scientists, engineers, and many longtime PM contributors and consultants?to help us sketch the rough shape of the next century. We canvassed our experts about the nature of future changes and when key breakthroughs might occur. How did we do? There's only one way to know for sure: Check back with us in 110 years.

you can turn that $1000 into $100,000 in one year by trading stocks, not investing. Investing is long term. The stock market is open from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm eastern, everyday. With cash accounts, when you sell a stock, you have to wait 3 days for the money to settle before you can buy another stock with that money you got from selling. So When you you first start, you won?t be able to make trades everyday because you only have $1000 and will have to wait three days.

Now about trading stocks and finding them?..

Stocks react to PR?s (Press Releases) . So in the morning find the stocks that are moving because of good news released that morning, and get in the stock as they are going up, and after you made 5, 10, 15, or what ever percent sell it quickly to lock you profit and forget about the stock. Wait for you funds to settle in three days, and trade again.

Once again, just unched the pink and otc boxes , show that you only see the NASDAQ news. the reason I say stay away from pink sheet and otc stocks is that the can go up 50% or double or tripple in one day, or sometimes go up 1000% in a few days to a week, but they can also drop quickly and go back to where they started or below. Another reason is you have to use limit orders and the price changes so much you have to keep changes you limit prices and it?s tricky just stay away. With real stocks like NASDAQ, NYSE, Or AMEX stocks, you can use MARKET ORDERS, that means all you have to do is put in the stock symbol and the number of shares, and the order goes through in seconds. To place a trade with $1000, you would subtract the commision. Then divide the money buy the current price of the stock. I use Scottrade. they charge $7 per trade. To make it easy say it?s $10. You would subtract 1000 by 10 which is $990. that?s what you have to work with. If the current price is at $10 the divide you money by that. That wold give you 99. So you have enough money to buy 99 shares. You would just go to scottrade and put buy 100 shares of xxxx or what ever the sybol is.
